I just got curious this morning and picked up the book, ‘Lectures on Homeopathic Materia Medica’. You see we, as a family, have been quite interested in trying homeopathic medicines for our various small ailments. Our general hatred for allopathic treatment led us to try alternative curing methods. We have had reasonable healing effects on us with homeopathic medication. I just got curious this morning and picked up the book that has been lying at home for a while now.
I wouldn’t have browsed more than a few pages and what struck me like a ton of bolts was the extraordinary level of detail symptoms that is attributed to each medicinal remedy. For instance if one takes a look at Arsenicum Album the list of indicators starts like this: ‘The surface of the body is pale, cold, clammy, and sweating, and the aspect is cadaveric. In chronic sickness with debility, anaemia, from long exposure to malarial influences, in the poorly fed and from syphilis this remedy is of great service.’ And the list of signs prolongs for a further nineteen pages.
Forget the puzzling thought about how anyone could ever know when to precisely prescribe Arsenicum Album to a patient. I am awestruck by the amount of observational research that must have gone into making of this dictionary of symptoms for each medicinal type.
I am still curious to understand how this non-violent, sweet pills with one molecule of medicine in a million drops of inert base concentration can cure a disease or relieve a pain it intends to. Placebo effect? Not likely. I have seen the medicines cure small children and even animals. There must be some truth behind this. Will I ever find out?
