Dependent on bats as we are, it would be disastrous to us if they die out.
If bats die out, farmers' crops would die out due to pests, pollination will not occur for some flowers, therefore fruits will not grow, reducing the size of the yield. Overripe fruits will not be eaten so the floor will be littered with overripe fruit.
All this the bats do for us and what do they get in return?
Habitats being ruined by smoke, deforestation, mining, quarrying, cave entrances blocked etc. Being killed for food, medicine and sport etc.
Tell me my friends is this what they deserve?
For ages we humans have been prejudiced against bats because of their looks, nocturnal habits, the belief that they carry diseases (when they actually eat mosquitoes and flys that carry fatal illnesses), and one of their species the vampire bat which drinks blood. Here our imagination runs wild, ghost stories almost always have bats shown on their covers. Vampire bats do not feed on human blood.
Thanks to the insectivorous bats the crops and our surroundings are cleared of insect pests. Of course we must not forget to thank their cousin and our friend the fruit bat who is very wrongly blamed of destroying the yield. It in fact eats only very ripe fruits which will not be good for selling or storing. Bats also pollinate and spread seeds which grow well due to the fact that they come out after digestion process with good manure!
When the bats do all this for us should we not do something in return?
Come my friends let us join hands and help the bat family.
